15 Cell Lithium Ion Battery Controller Analog Front End Reference Design
TIDA-00255: The TIDA00255 reference design utilizes the bq76940 analog front end (AFE) IC. It measures cell voltages, and die temperature or external thermistor voltage using a 14 bit ADC. Current is measured separately by a separate 16 bit coulomb counter. The design can turn off low side power FETs to stop discharge or charge based on selected hardware limits. A microcontroller not included in this design would be part of the battery controller to communicate to the AFE to set protection thresholds, turn on the power FETs, provide fault recovery and turn off the FETs for over or under temperature conditions. A battery controller design may contain other features which are not part of this reference design such as secondary over voltage protection, gauging, and isolated communication to let the system know the state of the battery.
36 to 75VDC Input 5V/15A Active Clamp Forward 1/8 Brick Form Factor Reference Design
PMP9126: This reference design generates a 5V/15A output from a 36V to 75V telecom input. The UCC2897A controls an active clamp forward converter power stage. The low gate charge and low RDSon of the CSD17501Q5A and CSD18502Q5B, implemented as a synchronous rectifiers, provides for a highly efficient design. This design is laid out in a standard eighth brick footprint and achieves efficiencies up to 94%. It uses only surface mount components, including ceramic output capacitors.
230-V, 400-W High Efficiency Battery Charger w/PFC and LLC for 36-V Power Tools Reference Design
TIDA-00355: The design is a 400-W high efficiency battery charger power supply designed to charge wide range of batteries in the voltage range of 20V to 42V and ideal for 10-Cell Li-Ion battery pack used in cordless Power Tools and Garden Tools. The design has boost PFC pre-regulator stage opearting at an efficiency of 96%. It provides high Power Factor(PF) of >0.99 and meets PFC regulation as per IEC61000-3-2 class A. The main converter stage is realised using LLC configuration and operates at an efficiency of 96% at full load. The charger is designed for input voltage range of 175V – 265V AC. The design form factor (230mm x 80mm) is compact for the power level of 400W. The design has an operating overall system efficiency of 92% at full load, with voltage and current regulation within +/- 3%. The EMI filter at the front end of the circuit is designed to meet EN55011 class A conducted emission levels.
18Vdc-60Vdc Input, 3.3V/15A Active Clamp Forward, 1/8 Brick Reference Design
PMP8973: The PMP8973 reference design generates a 3.3V/15A output from an 18V to 60V telecom input. The UCC2897A controls an active clamp forward converter power stage. The low gate charge and low RDSon of the CSD16415Q5 and CSD18502Q5B, implemented as synchronous rectifiers, provides for a highly efficient design. This design is laid out in a standard eighth brick footprint and achieves peak efficiencies over 92%. It includes remote sensing of the output voltage.
14-Channel Active Cell Balance Battery Management Reference Design
TIDA-00239: Active Balance chipset for use in large format Lithium-ion batteries that provides monitoring, balancing, and communications. With precise and robust active balancing, the Active Balance BMS is capable of bidirection power transfer at each cell. Each EM1401EVM can manage 6 to 14 cells (60V max) for Li-ion battery applications. The EM1401EVM modules can be stacked up to 1300V. The system provides fast cell balancing, diagnostics, and module to controller communication. Independent protection circuitry is also provided.
36V-75Vdc Input, 5V/50W 1/8 Brick Active Clamp Forward Reference Design
PMP9108: This reference design generates a 5V/10A output from a standard telecom 48V DC input. The UCC2897A controls an active clamp forward converter power stage. The low gate charge and low RDSon of the CSD17309Q3 and CSD18540Q5B, implemented as self-driven synchronous rectifiers, allow this design to achieve a max load efficiency over 93%. This design uses only ceramic output capacitors for high reliability and uses 100% surface mount components. The board is laid out on a standard eighth brick footprint.
