PMP9074: This 12V/5W reference design is optimized for very low cost and yet maintains good efficiency. Two key factors for minimizing cost are a BJT is used for the main power switch, and primary-side regulation eliminates the need for an optocoupler. The UCC28720 quasi-resonant flyback controller is able to implement both of these features. With quasi-resonant switching, efficiency at full load is over 80%, even with a BJT switch. Light-load losses are kept below 100mW due to burst mode operation.

PMP8787: The PMP8787 reference design uses the UCC28700 flyback controller to generate a 12V/500mA output from a univeral AC input. The primary-side regulation technique implemented by the UCC28700 eliminates the need for an opto coupler, reducing the size and cost of the design. In addition, the valley switching of the UCC28700 allows this design to achieve a maximum load efficiency over 80%; no load losses are less than 40mW. The circuit board measures only 28mm by 33mm, with a maximum height below 20mm.

The power supply is set up to be constant voltage-constant current. The voltage and current are set by fixed resistor values and could be set by micro-processor in the actual product. The design is biased by a low-cost BJT Flyback using the UCC28720 PWM controller.
