16-Bit, 8 Channel, Integrated Analog Input module for Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC)
TIDA-00164: This reference design provides a complete solution for a single supply industrial control Analog Input Module. The reference design is suitable for process control end equipment like Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), Distributed Control system (DCS), Data Acquisition Systems (DAS) modules that must digitize standard industrial current inputs and bipolar or unipolar input voltage ranges up to ±10V. In an industrial environment the analog voltage and current ranges typically include ±2.5 V, ±5 V, ±10 V, 0 V to 5 V, 0 V to 10 V, 4 mA to 20 mA, and 0 mA to 20 mA. This reference design can measure all standard industrial voltage and current inputs. Eight channels are provided on the module and each channel can be configured as a current or voltage input with software configuration. The SAR based architecture of ADS8688 leverages better sampling rate. The ADS8688 also includes an on-chip PGA. The on-chip PGAs are used to provide gain and level shift the bipolar signals. The ISO7141 & ISO1541D provides digital signal isolation between host microcontroller and measurement side. The power isolation has been achieved using LM5017 based Flybuck transformer. The module has on-board EEPROM to store calibration data and module configuration data. This reference design also demonstrate the TI products like hot swap & in-rush current limit controller, isolated Flybuck controller, low noise LDO, and I2C to GPIO expander that can be used in the entire PLC signal processing chain. The module has been designed to be pluggable to the IO Controller (TIDA-00123) for quick testing & evaluation. The module reference design also includes external protection circuit and has been tested and verified to be compliant with IEC61000-4 standards – EFT, ESD and Surge requirements with IO Controller platform.
32-bit ARM® Cortex™-M4F MCU based Small form factor Serial-to-Ethernet Converter
TIDA-00226: Serial communications have been widely used in grid infrastructure equipments. But the limitation of transmission distance and bandwidth of serial communication leads to demand for a more flexible and high-speed method to meet modern smart grid network migration. Ethernet has been accepted as an efficient communications method across industries in the last decade. This design demonstrates bi-directional switching and transmission between serial ports and Ethernet ports, which can enable legacy equipment that has only serial communication in their power grid to communicate with modern, Ethernet-based equipment without any changes to the existing hardware or software.
EMC Compliant High Side Current Sensing Reference Design with Overvoltage Protection
TIDA-00126: This reference design focuses on high-side current measurement using a family of TI's voltage output current shunt monitors. It can be used for measuring high-side current in industrial applications, where the common-mode dynamics can drop below ground. Overall the design helps designers build Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) compliant circuitry around current shunt monitor devices while achieving high-accuracy current monitoring solutions in presence of wide range of common-mode voltages from -14V to +80V.
EN55011 Compliant, Industrial Temperature, 10/100Mbps Ethernet PHY Brick Reference Design
TIDA-00207: This Ethernet PHY Brick reference design enables Texas Instruments customers to quickly design systems and release them to market, using TI industrial Ethernet PHY transceiver devices, fully compliant to EN5501 Class A EMI requirements. A 50 Pin Interface has been provided to interface with 32-Bit Cortex M4 processor based Controller board. The board has been designed in a small form factor (2 inches x 3 inches) which makes it easy to fit into existing products. This reference design demonstrates the advanced performance of the DP83848K Ethernet PHY transceiver devices, supports 10/100 Base-T and is compliant with IEEE 802.3 standard. The entire reference design operates from a single power supply (5V with On-Board regulator or 3.3V). All other voltages required for the Ethernet PHY transceiver are internally generated.
Analog Front End (AFE) for Merging Units and Multi-Function Protection Relays Reference Design
TIDA-00307: This solution addresses the front end needs of Merging Units where multiple measurement channels for current and voltage are required. This implementation is modular, allowing easy expansion of channels while at the same time keeping the connectivity to the processor minimal by using the SPI daisy chain feature in the TI's SAR ADC. Additionally, this solution is compact because the AFE not only integrates the front end circuitry for each channel, but also integrates a voltage reference with low temperature drift
Isolated IGBT Gate-Drive Push-Pull Power Supply with 4 Outputs
TIDA-00181: This reference design provides isolated positive and negative voltage rails required for Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT) gate drivers from a single 24-volt DC input supply. IGBTs are used in three phase inverters for variable-frequency drives to control the speed of AC motors. This reference design uses a push-pull isolated control topology and provides isolation compliant to IEC61800-5 and is intended to operate from a pre-regulated 24Vdc input. With a regulated (within 5%) input source, a simple open-loop, free-running oscillator can be implemented with a push-pull PWM controller. This topology is essentially a forward converter with two primary windings used to create a dual-drive winding. This fully utilizes the transformer core's magnetizing current more efficiently than flyback or the forward topologies. Another advantage this configuration has over flyback and forward configurations is that the supply output can be scaled up for higher power drives. This reference design also takes advantage of another benefit of the push pull topology in that multiple transformers can be controlled in parallel from a single controller to generate all the isolated voltage rails required for 3-phase IGBT inverters. Lastly, larger IGBTs for higher power drives sometimes require more gate drive current than what is provided by a typical IGBT gate driver, for which designers often use additional transistors for gate current boosting. This reference design provides +16V on the positive outputs and -8V on the negative outputs to compensate for the added voltage drop in those transistors.
Small Form Factor, Half-Duplex With Isolated & Non-Isolated RS485 Interface Reference Design
TIDA-00308: RS485 (Isolated, Non-isolated) is a popular interface for the Grid Infrastructure space, and is one of the most important options on newly designed equipment. TIDA-00308 will enable customers to quickly evaluate and design with TI RS485 devices for 3 different application scenarios, with an isolated power supply provided in this design. Additionally, test results in the user’s guide will demonstrate the IEC61000-4-2 ESD and IEC61000-4-5 surge tests performed on this design.
Reinforced Isolated IGBT Gate Drive Flyback Power Supply with 8 Outputs Reference Design
TIDA-00182: This reference design provides reinforced isolated positive and negative voltage rails required for Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT) gate drivers from a single 24-volt DC input supply. Utilizing a flyback isolated control topology, this reference design provides isolation compliant to IEC61800-5, and generates power rails for all three arms of the 3-phase inverter from a single transformer. The output power is currently set at 2W/IGBT but can be scaled up for higher power IGBTs by changing the transformer design.
Self or Dual-Powered Supply for Protection Relay, MCCBs & ACBs Ref Design
TIDA-00229: This power supply solution for Protection Relays & MCCBs handles both the current input from a Current Transformer (CT) or input from an Auxillary (Aux) source. The "self-powered" capability comes from being able to harness the power available in the grid through the CT. The flexibility of this solution's "dual-power" input comes from the ability to also handle the Aux input - which is often a battery source.
RS-232 Modem Interface Module for Protection Relay, IED, and Substation Automation Reference Design
TIDA-00557: The TIDA-00557 reference design provides an interface for a true RS-232 (eight signal + ground) physical layer interface for data terminal equipment (DTE) using a DB-9 plug-type connector with a provision for a data communication equipment (DCE) interface. This is intended for smart grid IED’s, protection relays and substation automation segments. This design meets +-/ 8kV contact discharge ESD protection as per IEC61000-4-2 and +/-1kV surge protection as per IEC61000-4-5.
